"You folks obviously have not been consuming enough liquor beverages."
Fezboy! went out on the town a bit last evening, sampling a little of the local culture. For its smallish size, Flowertown has, per capita, one of the better bar scenes I’ve lived near. It also has an outstanding arts and entertainment scene. However, last night was not about better bars, entertainment, and most definitely not about art. Last night we ventured into the land of Bear’s Place; to the land of karaoke.
In Fezboy’s opinion, karaoke comes in two flavors – horrid bad and horrid funny. I have been to an establishment that features karaoke about as many times as I have fingers on my left hand, it is not something that amuses me generally. I am not there to sing, the song selections are generally bad, and I am definitely not there to hear the tipsy chickie who believes she has a voice a la Whitney Houston (who’s voice I cannot stand anyway). I am there to see boisterous people who are able to toe the line between decent rendition and careful mocking. I’m there to see improvisational choreography. I’m generally there because someone else wants to be there.
Anyway, last night had its share of horrid bad. These few souls were greatly outweighed by the horrid good crowd though. Seeing a friend do his Madonna impersonation was excellent. Even the obligatory guys/gals duet from Grease was okay, if only because my wife’s boss has no rhythm but shakes his moneymaker anyway. These good acts were countered by a painful rendition of Vacation and an even more painful rendition of Freebird.
However, the kicker was the MC for the evening. He was the perfect combination of acerbic wit and chiding enthusiasm. He kept the crowd boisterous, just at the edge of control. And his heavy use and pronunciation of the phrase liquor beverages kept me rolling on the floor.
Now it is morning. Fezboy! is paying a significant toll for last night’s levity. I will survive however – it is only a half-day at work. This afternoon we fire up the Thunderchicken and take a roadie to the asphalt jungle on the southwest corner of Lake Michigan. Sweet Home Chicago! We will take in shows at the Goodman and the Red Moon Theaters. There are a few neighborhood walking tours sponsored by the city that we will take in. I will spend one afternoon on Waveland shagging home run balls and swilling a few liquor beverages. It will be nice just hanging out in our old stompin’ grounds.
Well, back to the grind. I should probably try to accomplish something tho squinty-eyed and slow moving.
